I’m Marc Randolph. I founded Netflix and 6 other companies. I wrote a book, do a podcast, run an entrepreneurial community, yada yada yada.
But you know what I’m really excited about? I just hit 365 days in a row on Duolingo!
I know, it’s not that impressive. In fact, according to Duolingo, they have more than 2,000,000 people who have streaks of more than 365 days, so I’m a pretty small deal.
Still, I’m pleased with myself. There is only one other thing that I do that consistently, and that’s write.
For a good while now, I’ve churned out something every Wednesday. I’m not perfect; sometimes I get it done a few weeks in advance – plenty of time for me to edit and polish leisurely. Other times I am furiously pecking away at 10PM on a Tuesday night. Sometimes I miss the Wednesday deadline altogether and sneak it on a Thursday or, God forbid, a Friday.
But I do it.
I’ve just found that, for me, the best way to understand something is to explain it to other people. And so, I do. Other times, some crazy thought pops in my head and I’m compelled to share it. Or a great question will come up in the comments that just begs to be answered. I love all of it.
But you know what I like even more than writing? I like the sense of community that writing offers. I love your comments. I like hearing your contrasting opinion. I love your examples. I love being challenged.
And that’s where Substack comes in. From the other writers I follow here (be sure to check out my recommendations!) I’ve seen the way that Substack promotes engagement. Well, I want that too.
So, for the next several months, I’ll be posting here twice a week: Every Wednesday I’ll send you my newest post – the exact same one that goes up on my website. And every Saturday, I’ll send out some of my best evergreen content from this past year. We will keep that up until I run out of old stuff . . . and then we’ll revert to a weekly, every-Wednesday, always-brand-spanking-new, cadence.
I hope you enjoy what’s to come as I muse on my usual topics: entrepreneurship, work-life balance; kids; strange observations; Netflix stories, and whatever stupid things happen to pop into my head once the plane has achieved sufficient altitude for me to put my tray table down and start typing.
At least for now, there won’t be a paid version. Everyone gets the same. I do like the Substack model, which allows writers to engage with their audiences and make a living at it, but I don’t need the money. So, until I figure out what – if anything – would make sense to charge for, it’s all gratis.
I hope you like what I have to say. And I genuinely am looking forward to hearing what you have to say as well.
And of course, there’s that streak to attend to. So I better get to it.
Substrack is crazy ! Can't believe that YOU (being you) and .. well ME (nobody) gets to share on the same plateform (obvisouly not having the same "impact" but oh well :) ) !
I get the streak thing, I'm sending my 18th weekly newsletter today (to my 50 reader, including largely family ;D) !! Thanks again and can't wait to read you here - Welcome !
This community is so connected. As a writer early in my career, I feel so lucky to be living in the Substack age where I can glean directly from the wisdom of people like you, Marc. Excited you’ve joined the rodeo!!
