Great stuff, but two additional examples might be the British Army leaving behind so much heavy equipment at Dunkirk and having the chance (but not always the time and money) to get new equipment, and the Italy in 1935 having the world’s largest and most modern Air Force but the same Air Force in 1940 was sadly obsolete - the risks of investing early in new tech?
This was a great post to read, Marc. I love the building from scratch part, the new beginnings, getting into the weeds and making something, being bold, being creative. My personal issue, that I am trying to overcome, is keeping an eye on the bigger picture as I make some progress. Slowly working towards that.
Marc, Great message and powerful closing line. 🙌 I am a retired (semi) psychiatrist. People desperately need mental health support, but the field is filled with very large groups offering strange old, process. I went concierge, no insurance and you are spot on!! Small practice, my small staff and I are available and we get people where they need to be. Thanks for confirmation. I’m a fan love your articles. Terry Martin
Last week I wrote and published an article on the Einstellung effect, which is a name given to the phenomenon of people choosing their old and familiar solutions even when more effective solutions become available. This article is such a great perspective on how and why this plays out in some contexts I didn't even consider. It does make me wonder though, when should you lean into your newness and when should you trust the merit of hard earned experience?
As a writer, I am a scrappy startup. Thanks for reminding me that it can be an advantage.
Here's to the thrill of new beginnings! 🚀💥
Excellent post on a timeless lesson. Love that you’re on Substack!

Yeah there is nothing better than the benefit of hindsight *and* a clean slate in starting up a new project.

I get so excited when I see a post from Marc, such good article and I learn so much. Sometimes it's good to start from scratch to test yourself.
